Artist's Comments

This was meant to be a shot of an elderly lady climbing up the stairs with a tremendous overload of plastic bags, with the obvious enough implicit meaning. However, i'm still very unexperienced with my (or any for that matter) camera, and ended up making a pathetic atempt where light is concerned. i then proceded to stubbournly stalk the place for a while and wait for someone else to fill the frame, and took a rather excessive number of shots, in order to practice photometrics, mostly.
this one was my favourite of the results. I enjoy the way the 2D wall contrasts with the three dimention projection of the people. Well, i would put it better but my english is a bit limited. Let it speak for itself.

any critique is welcome

i think its a great shot actually. yes it could use some increased contrast, but the composition of the wall with the cross stairs and the people is excellent.

I think you need to give yourself some more credit. You clearly have wonderful intuitive skill for observation, and your pictures show depth, focus and concentration. Your English isn't at all shabby, either! You express yourself eloquently, and the descriptions give valuable insight into your motivation for taking a certain shot.

Thank you for you're comment.
As for the contrast, it was my second time in the laboratory, and was not at the time aware of the use of contrast filters. Do you think they could bring any improvement when printing this, or do you think the graffiti it'self removes the potential contrast?
Any advice will be most welcome

Thank you ever so much for the favourite, and for the comment. I do not exactly lack confidence in my ability to capture images themselves, that was in fact what motivated me to get into photography. what i still have is a great lack of technicall now-how, and hence my heavilly critical apreciation of my own work, not to bring it down for what it is, but to allow room for improvement, instead of assuming that was the best that could have been done with the image i could see at the moment.
Thanks again for you're comment, and for the support

Sure! I know exactly how you feel, I'm kind of in the same boat.

i don't know much about darkroom work, all my processing is done in photoshop, but i'm sure there are those filters. [link] i did a quick shadows and highlights increase. see what you think. i think everything shows up much better now...

wow that does make a difference. i really must learn to use photoshop
one of my housemates has the cds but i never got to learn how to use it, it seams really usefull.
i think, however, i can produce the same effect in the darkroom. i looked into it and now know how to use dcontrast filters.
tuesday i'll be spending all afternoon in the darkroom so i'll get round to increasing contrast on this. i'll update the original photograph.
thanks for the advice, there is clearly room for improvement where contrast is concerned, and can be done without taking the picture again. I just have to re-print it.

Thanks for the comment, it was tremendouly usefull.
:icongbisus13:
hey, if you can do it in traditional methods, go for it! photoshop is so easy, i have more respect for darkroomers. not that id say avoid learning to use it. glad i could point out some of what could be done. im looking forward to more work, i'll be watching you ;p
cheers!

I would increase the contrast here. I think it may work better with the image. And try to adjust levels with photoshop (I'm not such a fan for digital enhancement, but I think it can help)

You can also reduce the size of the image after you scan it, to visualize better the composition.
